What’s the Point?
Right. So, why do we want a good morning routine? Does it really benefit us?
Well, yes. Forbes does a great job outlining the correlation behind productivity and a morning routine.
Productivity is an amazing quality to incorporate into your day. But, what else?
Well, I can firsthand say that switching from waking up later to waking up early has changed my day by a landslide.
How it has changed my morning:
- More time to get ready in the morning
- I tend to make myself some breakfast
- I get to spend time with my bunny (Snoopy)
- I am able to tidy up my room quickly
- I feel more refreshed
I mean seriously, the list goes on and on.
Now, I was forced to implement a routine to wake up at 5am because I am a fellow barista! The beauty of it is that I actually found out that this works better for me.
But that is not to say that this will work for you. Many successful people wake up later in the day (Pharrell Williams, Mark Zuckerberg).
Planning the Night Before
Creating a successful morning does piggyback off of the night before.
Some things to think about:
- Is your room nice and tidy?
- Did you lay out your clothes for the morning?
- Did you think about your goals and intentions for the morning?
- Did you create a to-do list for yourself?
- Did you pack a well-balanced lunch for your day/plan out your lunch?
These are just some ideas to help you prepare for your successful morning! It is so important to plan, plan, plan.
One thing that has helped me is to limit my screentime at night before bed and right when I wake up. When I limit this, I realize I have more time for my personal priorities.
That Stupid Snooze Button
Don’t press it! Seriously! Just, don’t. It is SO bad for your body. We have sleep cycles and if you interrupt a sleep cycle, your day could potentially be shot.
The snooze button will only hurt you; it will never help you. I know my sleep cycle is between 17-19 minutes. Try to figure out your sleep cycle and remember to never hit the snooze button! EVER.
The next step is to figure out what time is the best time to wake up. I find that anywhere between 5-8am work best for me. It is totally different for everyone so find your own sweet spot!
HYDRATE!!! The first thing you should be doing when you wake up is to drink your water! This is your fuel; this is what your body needs.
I like to think about it like this: your body is working so hard at night to recharge and replenish with what it already has. When you wake up, giving your body that hydration is so essential to keep your body running properly!
Fuel Your Body
Try to get a nutritious breakfast in every morning. I try to eat within the first 30 minutes of waking up. But, if I am not feeling a whole meal (trust me, I know it can be hard early in the morning) I tend to just throw a protein shake right down the pipe.
It is so crucial to get your nutrients in and especially in the morning. Make sure that you set yourself up for success by fueling your body right away!
Find your favorite breakfast foods at your grocery store and plan them out for your mornings. Whether it is an apple and some orange juice or a full course meal, just do what you can to fuel your body.
Mental Clarity
If you make time for it, you will surely find joy in writing in a journal or meditating for a few minutes (or more). I love to practice gratitude in the morning and use my own journal for this!
Feel free to take a look at this Gratitude Journal
You could also indulge in reading different novels or informational books! Reading is a great way to relax and calm your brain. Even if you decide to read for 15 minutes, it is a start to a more refreshed and successful morning!
I recommend the book Not a Happy Family by Shari Lapena
I enjoy murder mysteries, so if that is something that interests you, I highly encourage you to take a look!
Structure
You must plan, plan plan. Same thing I said before. Planning is essential for a successful morning/day. You could use a physical planner or a digital one.
It really doesn’t matter as long as it is useful for you to use and follow.
I suggest writing down your top 3 priorities for the day and anything else that you need to complete. You could be as detailed on minimal as you would like. Again, it is for you, so tailor it to your own personal needs.
On the contrary, be open to changes throughout your day when planning. Remember this when planning for/in your morning. Make sure your core values get done, but if something changes, something changes. EMBRACE IT.
